There are a lot of Christmas movies that come out every year. From small TV movies that drip in cheese for Hallmark and GAC to bigger budget theatrical releases, movies are one of the ways we all get in the mood. While most of these films stay under the radar and are forgotten the following year when the latest Christmas movies replace them, some endure season after season and become a tradition. Among the best enduring films are National Lampoon’s Christmas vacation home aloneand It’s a beautiful life. However, if you are a 90’s kid, one of the movies is at the top of the list Santa Claus. After three movies, Disney+ is bringing back Tim Allen for the red suit for a miniseries, and they’ve just landed another ’90s lead.
Deadline reports that the miniseries has landed Laura San Giacomo in a role alongside Tim Allen. While the film trilogy delves into plenty of Christmas and holiday lore, the miniseries seems to delve into international lore. Giacomo was cast as La Befana, an Italian Christmas witch who gave sweets to good children on January 6 known as The Epiphany. She also delivered coal to the bad kids. If this sounds familiar to you, it should. She’d been flying the skies long before old Kris Kringle Rudolph ever missed a reign. While there isn’t much synopsis information, it’s possible that Giacomo could play a villain for Tim Allen’s Santa.
Ever since he faced Jack Frost in 2006, people have been clamoring for Tim Allen to don the big red suit for a part four Santa Claus 3: The Escape Clause. After 14 years of waiting, Disney is giving it a chance. The synopsis so far states that the series will be about Scott Calvin, who is approaching his 65th birthday and realizes he can’t be Santa Claus forever. He will likely spend six episodes looking for a replacement for himself so he can take his wife and children to the South Pole to have a normal life. Apparently he longs for a life of queuing at the Apple Store buying Christmas presents instead of having an army of elves to get them for him.
As for the rest of the cast, who will return to the Santa Clause franchise alongside Tim Allen, David Krumholtz will return as head elf Bernard. Elizabeth Mitchell will return as the loving Mrs. Carol Clause. Kal Penn, Matilda Lawler and Austin Kane round out the cast. Showrunner Jack Burditt and producers Kevin Hench, Richard Baker and Rick Messina will be reuniting with Allen. They previously worked together on handyman and Last Man Standing. With all the controversy surrounding Disney’s remake of Buzz Lightyear in light year, the fact that the company is giving the actor another opportunity to return to one of his most iconic roles shows they are burying the hatchet. Is it too much to ask Judge Reinhold to come back with his sweaters?
