During this weekend’s Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (MVAAFF), Netflix offered attendees a screening of the first episode of their new limited series Completely newwhat stars Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3). Aside from the episode, it was also announced that we can expect the series to hit the platform in late October. The story revolves around a couple from different backgrounds who begin a romance in Italy and quickly become each other’s family.
Netflix also took the opportunity to reveal some more details about the new series, including the Completely new Poster. The graphics use Sicily as the landscape to create a light-hearted story starring Saldaña’s character, Amahle, and her onscreen friend, Lino (Eugenio Mastrandrea) in the rear view mirror of a Vezpa as if they were deeply in love.
Completely new based on the author’s memoir of the same name Tembi Locke. The author teamed up with her sister Attica Locke to develop the book into a series. Back in 2019, the Shondaland website got the two siblings to interview each other and talk about the inspiration for the story. Tembi revealed:
“I was in Sicily, three summers after my widowhood, and it hit me. At the end of a perfect summer’s day, I sat at the dining table with my young daughter and across from us with my mother-in-law. And I had a thought: how did we get here, especially given where we started AND given that the only person connecting us is gone? This question felt like the making of a book. Of course, it was another two years before I felt ready to write it. I had to build up my courage to tell the story. […] It is an absolute act of bravery to say, “I have something to say, this story is important.” Maybe more for women and maybe more for black women. […] So writing is basically courageous, memoirs maybe even more so in some respects.”
The sibling screenwriters wrote the limited series premiere and season finale, while the writing team Amy Wang, JJ Flechter, Marguerite MacIntire, Joshua Allenand Jason coffee write the other six episodes. directs the series Nzinga Stewart (invent Anna) and Dennie Gordon (jack ryan).
Apart from Saldaña and Mastrandrea, Completely new also stars Danielle Deadwyler (station eleven), KeithDavid (Green leaf), KellySmith (Z nation), Judith Scott (Dear whites), Lucy Sardo (Alone with your dreams), Paride Benassai (Baaria), and Robert Rigano (I know so much is true).
